King Mengrai (the originator of Chiangmai city) has named the city as “Noppa Buri Sri Nakornping Chiangmai” because of this city located in strategically place, appropriates to found a city. Thus, then he ordered to dig moat, built barrier in rectangle shape with 5 doors in each direction and also pleased constructing castles, palaces and houses.

Since 1296, the ancient time, Tapae Gate was crowded with locality and non-locality people, both Thais and Foreigners came for trading because of the gate places nearby Ping River, which is Main River for shipping and trading, moreover, it is the river that indicating the identity of Chiangmai.

Montri Hotel located in inner town, opposite Tapae Gate. Tha Phae Gate

This Gate located on the eastern wall of the city dates back to the year 1296, when king Mangrai founded Chiang Mai. It was originally known as Chiang Ruak Gate after the nearby village of Chiang Ruak At that time the Phae (raft lauding) the name given to the gate in the outer earthen ram part of the city near Wat Saen fang. It the course of time the names changed. To wards the ‘19th century the gate in the earthen rampart became known as “Outer The Phae Gate” while Chiang Ruak Gate in the city wall was called “inner Phae Gate” The outer gate was later dismantled and the remaining inner gate gradually became known for short as “The Phae Gate”

The present The Phae Gate was rebuilt in 1985-1986 on the basis of one or the city gate taken in 1899 the reconstruction was done by the Chiang Mai Provincial office the Chiang Mai Municipality and and the fine Arts Department in collaboration with Chiang Mai University teachers college and a group of dedicated private citizens.
